You might think that CAVE TALK has become a card carrying supporter of the “Alt-Right” movement that has subverted the minds of half of the USA but fear not, the logo has nothing to do with politics but with the CAVE’S visit last week to the eye popping William Eggleston exhibition in the FOAM. It seems that the southerner William Eggleston attributes the underlying compositional inspiration for many of his photos to the form of the Confederate flag. This and many more unexpected and inspiring aspects of his worko.a. use of color, framing and banal subject matter were looked at, dissected and discussed during our 2 hour visit to the exhibition. What a great show !
WILLIAM EGGLESTON
If you haven’t been there yet be sure to find the time. I’ve included a few related LINKS below for those who are interested in diving deeper into the world of this southern gentlemen /rogue. I included a link to the podcast “S-Town” not because it has a direct connection to Eggleston’s photography but rather to the hidden deep-south milieu which he lays bare with his photos. The same kind of uncanny, perverse world that the David Lynch’s films find under the rocks of “Blue Velvet”.
During the visit there was a much too brief discussion about the changing role and function that the traditional artwork / image plays in our daily lives and the shifting relevance of art in this exchange. How does visual art engage with events and social phenomenon that might not look like art or even be considered art but are still important transmitters and indicators of a new thinking and new perceptions ? Can traditional visual “artwork” articulate and express this new way of seeing the world ? At the risk of having you stop and scratch your head at this point just consider for a moment how we are overwhelmed with images each with their own agenda and goal, And at the same time how sophisticated we are in relating to and using all these new signals. And how we dissect all the “old” images to serve us for the “new” needs.
HEH ! Why not organize a CAVE night around this question?
This discussion all started when we were talking about the Jordon Wolfson exhibition in the Stedelijk and specifically in regard to his video works. Be sure to visit it before it closes this week You can then also catch the new Seth Price exhibition which also deals with this question.
JORDON WOLFSON
The next CAVE will be visiting the SETH PRICE exhibition on FRIDAY 28 APRIL. You can’t say you haven’t been warned so please mark that date in your Agenda. This exhibition is not only interesting and challenging but just plain IMPORTANT to see and think about. Especially in relation to your own works motivations, inspirations and subject matter.
Lastly I would hope that everyone will please take the opportunity to send works, photos, texts, links, ideas , whatever to us so that we can put them on the STUDENTEN page of our website.
Also if you have your own website we can link it with your contributions. ALSO DON’T FORGET TO LINK OUR NEW WEBSITE ADRES TO YOUR SITE.
A lot to do and think about.
IF ENOUGH (min 3 / 4) PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED I WOULD BE HAPPY TO MAKE AN ADDITIONAL VISIT TO THE EGGLESTON EXPO IN THE FOAM. IT’S THAT GOOD. LET ME KNOW IF YOU’RE INTERESTED.
